Proven Methods for Treating Hair Loss

Doctor Treating Hair Loss

Are you losing more hair than you’re supposed to, or is your hairline starting to recede? You’re not alone. You don’t have to look very far to find someone experiencing hair loss.

Fortunately, there is no hair loss problem too great that cannot be fixed by a hair transplant surgeon like our very own Dr. Scott Darling here at Darling Hair Restoration in Liberty, Missouri and Urbandale, Iowa.

Dr. Darling is best known for the vast array of nonsurgical and surgical solutions he offers for all types of hair loss—helping countless men and women in Missouri and Iowa restore the confidence that comes from having lush, healthy hair. Let’s explore some of the proven hair-loss treatment methods you can choose from here at Darling Hair Restoration.

Medications

There are only two drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for hair loss: minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Propecia).

  • Minoxidil

Minoxidil lotion, which is usually applied on the scalp, works by increasing the blood flow to the hair follicles, thereby providing nourishment and promoting hair growth.

  • Finasteride

This type of hair loss medication is taken orally, and it works by blocking the mechanism of action of alpha-reductase, an enzyme responsible for transforming testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair loss in men. Finasteride consequently restores normal testosterone levels in the body, thereby promoting hair growth.

Finasteride is, however, contraindicated in women of childbearing age, and it does very little for inactive follicles.

Surgical Procedures

Dr. Darling also offers a number of hair transplant procedures, the most common of which are outlined below:

  • Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)

This technique involves Dr. Darling individually harvesting hair follicles from a certain area of your scalp (usually in the back, where hair tends to be the thickest), and transplanting them into areas where there’s sparse hair. He then cleans and covers the donor area with a bandage.

  • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

FUT involves Dr. Darling taking a strip of skin from a donor site, dissecting the hair follicles, and transplanting them into the small incisions he made in your recipient site. He then stitches up the incision in the donor site.

Nondrug, Nonsurgical Treatments

When people hear the term “hair-loss treatment,” what usually comes to mind is either medications or a hair transplant. However, there are also nondrug and nonsurgical hair-loss treatment options available.

Below are some of the popular nonsurgical procedures Dr. Darling offers for hair loss:

  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
  • ACell + PRP Therapy
  • Allograft + PRP Therapy
  • Stem Cell + PRP Therapy
  • Low-Level Laser Therapy

To determine which of these hair-loss treatment methods is right for you, Dr. Darling will perform a thorough assessment. He will then discuss your options, help you weigh them, and guide you to the suitable one based on your unique needs.
