What Is a PRP Hair Transplant?

PRP Hair Transplant

Genetics and age can play a role in male or female pattern baldness. Hair loss affects about 50 million American men and about 30 million American women, but it can take a toll on your confidence and self-esteem.

Luckily, there is a revolutionary treatment available that helps to stimulate your own hair growth: platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Not your father’s hair transplant, PRP uses your own blood platelets to foster your hair follicles to start regrowing your hair again.

What Is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma is used to stimulate hair growth and to help in other cosmetic procedures. It is also being used to help reduce knee pain in the field of orthopedics.

PRP treatment is safe, as the blood platelets will come from your own blood sample which is taken right here in our office – just like a regular blood draw. Most people know about platelets for their role in forming scabs on the skin to heal surface wounds.

How Does It Regrow My Hair?

After a blood sample is drawn, your platelets are processed in a centrifuge to separate them from the other parts of your blood, such as white blood cells. The highly concentrated plasma is then injected into the area where you wish to have more hair.

Your own blood platelets are therefore used to trigger cell propagation, fast healing, and tissue regeneration in the treated area. Platelets contain natural growth factors which have been shown to help stimulate hair regrowth in dormant follicles.

How PRP Hair Transplant Works

Nowadays, platelet-rich plasma is used for everything from healing a joint injury to facials to hair restoration. Research has shown that the high concentrations of platelets extend the growth phase of the hair cycle, so you’ll keep more hair and lose less hair.

The procedure starts with a technician or physician drawing your blood. The sample is then spun in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets. Your doctor will then inject the platelet-rich plasma into the part of the scalp or other area where hair loss has occurred. It will take only about 10 minutes for your hair restoration doctor to perform the injections around your dormant follicles.

These injections are usually administered every 3 or 4 months. The doctor will develop an injection schedule for you depending on your genetics, age, hormones, and hair-loss pattern.

Is PRP Hair Treatment Safe?

Because the platelets come from your own blood, your body will not reject the PRP treatment itself. People have only (rarely) had reactions to the other elements associated with the injection.

Although safe, people who fall under the following categories are not recommended for this procedure:

  • Those who have underlying disorders that can cause hair loss (e.g., thyroid disease, lupus)
  • Those who are on blood thinners
